Why we're doubling down on women-owned and women-serving businesses

At SongBird Marketing Communications, we’ve always believed in the power of connection — in building brands that stand for something, speak to someone, and spark real relationships. Over the years, we’ve worked with businesses across many industries and demographics, and it’s been an incredible journey. In fact, we have worked with some pretty cool brands and people. Just like we try to push our own clients out of their comfort zone to think about the business in a new light, I’ve been pushed to think about SongBird and what we’ve accomplished since launching in 2013.

Today, we’re announcing an intentional shift in our focus: moving forward, we will be dedicating our work to supporting women-owned and women-serving businesses.

Why the shift?

This change isn’t about narrowing our vision — it’s about sharpening it. And to be honest, looking back on client successes throughout the years, it became clear that we have always had this mindset, but never really articulated it.

In Canada, women-owned businesses represent an important segment of our economy. Recent reports indicate women make up 19% of all majority business owners, and that number continues to grow. We have also noticed a major shift in brands that aren’t afraid to talk about women’s health and women’s issues that are important to the markets they serve.

But despite the momentum, the challenges are real. Women entrepreneurs face persistent barriers – from access to funding and mentorship to gaining visibility in their industries.

We’ve seen firsthand the passion and creativity that women bring to business. We’ve also seen how often their stories go untold, their achievements overlooked, and their ideas underfunded. It’s time for woman-owned and woman-serving businesses to take up space and be seen.

The inspiration behind the mindset shift

This shift was inspired by countless conversations with women founders, nonprofit leaders, and purpose-driven CEOs and marketers over 12 years in business. These are women who are juggling families and financial forecasts. Who are creating safe spaces, driving social impact, and leading teams with empathy and strength. Women who are redefining what success looks like on their own terms.

As a woman-owned agency, we see ourselves in these stories. And we’re ready to help make a difference — by amplifying voices, building platforms, and helping women-owned and women-serving businesses thrive.

What does this all mean?

Whether you're a startup looking to build buzz, an expert who needs a thought leadership platform, or a consumer brand built for women – we’re here to help you grow. Our services — from media relations and influencer marketing to social media strategy and brand positioning — are tailored to help you connect with your audience in meaningful ways.

While we love building marketing strategies that work and are exciting, it’s never been JUST about the marketing for us. It’s about working with brands and people who are doing cool things and making a positive impact in the world.

It’s your time to shine

If you’re a woman-owned or woman-serving brand looking for a marketing partner who truly gets it — we’d love to talk. This isn’t just our new direction. It’s our renewed commitment to purpose, to impact, and to you.

Women shouldn’t just find their place — they should take up space.
