Is your brand a community or just a feed? Building real loyalty
You’ve heard us say it so many times. Your follower count is a vanity metric.
You can have 100,000 followers but have little to no sales. If your social media strategy consists of shouting into the void, posting polished product shots, and hoping for a "like," you don’t have a community – it’s just a digital catalog.
Does your audience feel invested in your brand? You have to move past transactional marketing and into relationship building. So how do you do that?
The "Feed" vs. The "Community"
How do you know where you stand? It usually comes down to the direction of the conversation.
How to Make the Pivot
Building a community doesn’t happen by accident. It requires a shift in how you view your audience. Stop seeing them as "leads" and start seeing them as "members."
Stop Talking At Them: A feed tells people what to buy. A community asks people what they think. Use polls, open-ended questions, and "behind the scenes" content to invite your audience into the process. If you’re launching a new product, ask them to vote on the packaging color. Make your audience feel like stakeholders.
Reward the Super-Fans: Loyalty isn't just about a points-based app. It’s about recognition. When a customer leaves a thoughtful review or shares a photo of your product, don’t just "like" it. Feature them. Start a conversation. Real loyalty is built when a customer realizes there’s a human on the other side of the screen.
Facilitate Connections: The strongest communities exist when your followers start talking to each other. Whether it’s a dedicated Discord server, a private Facebook group, or a recurring hashtag, give your community a place to hang out.
The Bottom Line
A feed is easily ignored. A community is hard to leave.
There is so much noise online – and offline – and you have to stop chasing vanity metrics and those transactional sales. People don't want to be sold to anymore; they want to belong.
